Back-to-School Japanese Style Lunches

During back-to-school season, please come join LIFE Sampling at People's Food Co-op to learn how to make much-loved Japanese style lunches! Learn to make Onigiri (rice balls) and Onigirazu (rice sandwiches). These gluten-free recipes can satisfy people with different type of dietary needs. In this class, we will use vegetarian ingredients. Once you learn these easy techniques, you can adapt these recipes to whatever ingredients you have in your refrigerator and experiment with your unlimited creativity to make quick, deliciously nutritious, and packable lunches throughout the week.

About the Facilitators

In 2014, Yuri Baxter-Neal and Sakiko Setaka started LIFE Sampling, a company that plans and manages experience-based and cross-cultural events and workshops that connect Japanese visitors with Portland locals. Life Sampling provides interactive opportunities for Japanese visitors to “sample” Portlanders’ lives. They also provide events and workshops for Portland locals to “sample” Japanese-style lives. LIFE Sampling creates opportunities for people to share their skills, perspectives, and stories across cultures.

Past events have included:

  • Coordinating with Japanese visitors to cook a dinner at a Portland family's home kitchen with the ingredients from a local Farmers' market and share food and stories around the table.

  • Hosting a picnic where Japanese and American moms talked about their school systems, while their children played together.

  • Facilitating miso making workshops, rice ball workshops, and Temari sushi workshops.

LIFE Sampling events and workshops encourage Japanese visitors and local Portlanders to appreciate cultural similarities, learn from each other’s differences, and embrace each other like extended family.
