Watsu: Aquatic Bodywork for Body, Mind, and Spirit

This is a FREE presentation open to all people who would like to learn about the origins, foundation, applications, and benefits of Watsu.

Watsu literally means Water + Shiatsu, but it is more than that. As increasing numbers of therapists have incorporated Watsu into their treatment programs, Watsu gained increasing acceptance as a form of aquatic therapy, and Watsu is now practiced a spas, clinics, health centers, and hospitals in over 90 countries.

On the occasion of the World Water Day, i.e. 22 March, the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association, WABA, decided to host the World Watsu® Week in a large number of countries and cities at the same time. The objective of World Watsu® Week is to introduce Watsu® to the general public globally in a single week.

Watsu has profound beneficial effects for trauma, both physical and psycho-emotional, with therapeutic application for:

~ acute injuries: strains, sprains, tendinitis, bursitis, slipped disc…
~ arthritis: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis…
~ chronic pain and postural misalignment: scoliosis, hyperlordosis, hypercifosis...
~ after surgery recovery: rotator cuff, hip and knee replacement, fractures…
~ Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA): whiplash, headaches, back pain, numbness…
~ pregnancy: low back pain, labor preparation and stimlulation, bonding with baby, proper baby positioning...
~ pediatric health concerns: birth injuries, torticolis, colics, sleep patterns...
~ neurological conditions: Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis...
~ respiratory patologies: asthma, chronic pneumonia...
~ somato-emotional conditions: insomnia, anxiety, stress, PTSD, ADHD, autism...

Watsu is performed in one-on-one pool sessions in chest-deep warm water. During a session, the practitioner gently cradles, moves, stretches, and massages a receiver (client or patient). A typical session consists of a progression of breath coordination, movement patterns in different positions, and acupressure and massage. Movement patterns including gentle cradling and rocking, more dynamic stretching and mobilization, stillness, and specific mobilization techniques focused on the needs or condition of the receiver.
