Hate, Housing, and the Landscape of our City

Participants of this free training will understand and acknowledge our shared history; embrace our common values as neighbors and gain knowledge about our rights and responsibilities in housing. From racial exclusion laws in Oregon’s constitution and racially exclusionary housing practices such as “redlining” and restrictive deed covenants, to continuing involuntary economic displacement from neighborhoods, we must learn and acknowledge the history of racial discrimination, segregation and displacement to understand the different experiences of and disparate outcomes for our most vulnerable community members. Our history consciously intended to divide us by race and class. We must find our way forward to more open and inclusive communities in a way that unites us. Offered by the Fair Housing Council of Oregon.

The Portland United Against Hate Coalition is pleased to partner with the Office of Community and Civic Life and SE Uplift to provide the following five trainings between October 2019 and June 2020. The trainings all elevate awareness of the prevalence and danger of hate in our city and offer practical guidance on how to safely interrupt hate and provide trauma-informed care. All the trainings are free and open to the public, you are welcome to sign up for a single program or sign up for the whole series.

The Community Room at People’s Food Coop is located on the 2nd floor up a flight of stairs. It is also accessible by elevator lift--just let a staff member know you need to use it and they will help you!
